Keynote Topics
Letting go of the past:
Of all the things that can and do cause relapse learning to "let go of the past" is one of the most important mindsets to adopt. Robert has applied this principal in his own life and has seen it in the live's of others. Those who do not adopt this mindset do not last long in sobriety. Even for those who last for any period of time, they never fully discover the freedom and joy that comes from being clean and sober. Robert shares with you what he has learned from AA, his relationship with his sponsor and his life experiences in overcoming the past.
Understanding the love of God:
At the core of us all rests the love of God. One can not look at nature and all that exists and believe that God is not real. The problem for those who suffer from addiction is that we have lost touch with anything relating to the goodness of God some time ago. We either believe He is not real or He could never love anyone who has done the things we have done. The reality is very simple. There is one God and He loves us very much and it grieves Him to see us suffer. Robert has come to know God on a personal level and will state that he owes his entire life and his sobriety to the love that God has demonstrated for him, through His Son Jesus Christ.
Recovery as a way of life:
The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous is very clear from the Forward to the First Addition. One hundred recovered alcoholics got together and agreed upon a precise method of getting and staying sober. Now, some of you might say that is impossible because you could never get ten, let alone one hundred to agree on any one thing, but they did and there method and approach has worked for millions of us for the last eight decades and will continue to "work when you work it". Robert has had success in adopting this precise method of realizing the state of hopeless mind and body was a seemingly state and has learned to become well in his recovery as the Big Book clearly teaches.
Family life in sobriety:
Now that I am sober what do I do? If you had a family in your active addictive condition then they are likely to know you as you trained them to know you. Getting used to the "sober" you is going to be a challenge. We are very anxious to begin living as if nothing has happened and we can get very frustrated when our wife, children or other family members don't come around as quickly as we would like. Understanding that selfishness and self-centeredness are at the core of addiction, we need to look outside of ourselves for just a moment. We need to view our lives as others have observed us and tolerated us for many years. Things don't change overnight just because we no longer engage in using, but there are ways to help our family grow in trust as we grow in our sobriety.
